Charlotte Mason was a believer in something she called “handicrafts.” This term does not refer to things like prepackaged craft kits, but rather to things that stir the child’s creativity and imagination, as well as teaching them skills that they can use for life. In Volume 1 of her “Home Education,” she said, “The points to be borne in children’s handicrafts are… that they should not be employed in making futilities… that they should be taught slowly and carefully what they are to do…. that slipshod work should not be allowed….) and that…. the children’s work should be kept well within their compass.”
